Protecting the environment from synthetic substances

Synthetic Materials

Many innovations lead to synthetic substances entering nature, with negative effects on our eco-systems. Thus in the future any further environmental pollution from the production, use and recycling of synthetic substances must be avoided. It must be ensured that no new potentially harmful substances enter the environment. To achieve this, we are working, for example, on the evaluation of alternative materials for our products and on the introduction of a product take-back system.

RENEWABLE AND ALTERNATIVE RAW MATERIALS IN USE

The products of our business units are made from high-quality plastics. In addition, we are constantly looking for and testing new materials - including those made from renewable raw materials, which are already used in some articles. Many alternative raw materials are also used. So-called recyclates are obtained from discarded refrigerators, among other things, and are used by the PLAYMOBIL business unit. In this way, we are continuously expanding the proportion of recycling in our product range. It goes without saying that our products are produced in the usual quality and that no compromises are made in terms of safety.

We are already succeeding in designing all production processes in such a way that virtually no waste is produced. We recycle material and sell plastics that are incorporated into other products.

MATERIAL CYCLE

By 2030, we want to establish a closed material cycle in production. Our aspiration is for our products to be returned to a production cycle. Products that have been produced should be 100 % reused. In other words, we want to be part of a circular economy. Therefore, all our articles and packaging are already designed in such a way that they can be reused at the end of their service life. The recyclability and reusability of all products are already taken into account during development. All business models of the Horst Brandstätter Group are designed to use few resources, be durable and avoid waste as completely as possible.

PACKAGING

Optimizing all packaging to use recyclable materials is important to us. At PLAYMOBIL, all shipping and sales packaging is made of almost 100% from recycled cardboard. Wherever possible, we avoid unnecessary packaging. We are currently revising our entire packaging concept in ongoing projects. Further optimization of packaging sizes will have a positive impact on the emissions balance, both at our company and in our value chain. As a result, we anticipate significantly lower energy and material requirements, more space in the warehouse, the reduction of consumer waste, and increased transport capacities.

PLASTIC FILMS (PCR) AND PAPER

We also optimize the use of materials in the area of plastic film and, wherever possible, dispense with unnecessary material. Film pouches have already been converted to post-consumer recycled film, which is made from recycled plastics - i.e., packaging that has already been used by consumers and fed into the recycling loop. When evaluating the material used, we take into account the entire life cycle assessment of a specific product. This also applies to the question of whether plastic films or paper are used. We want to include all parameters in the decision - such as the impact on the environment, recyclability, functionality or weight.
